Self-portraits are a staple of any well-designed art class, and for us in animation, it will be no different. The only difference — we will be turning ourselves into a cartoon! Yay!
First, you will be using all the skills and tools you’ve learned in ToonBoom to create a “snapshot” of yourself; this is essentially a sample test to get you comfortable for your second assignment, which is the actual self-portrait. When creating the first snapshot, be loose with your lines drawings, take your brush’s Smoothness up high, so that your lines are well-defined and smooth.
Also, be sure to check out the samples below.
Good luck and enjoy!
ASSIGNMENT01: SNAPSHOT
- Take a picture of yourself in Photo Booth
- Import it into Toon Boom
- Trace yourself and add color
- Draw a rectangular box around yourself as a background and fill it in with a gradient (do not turn in your self portrait with a white background)
- Add additional background elements if desired (not required)
- When you’re done, go to FILE > EXPORT SNAPSHOT and choose PNG
- Name it P#_LastFirst_Snapshot
- Submit your artwork to the appropriate Dropbox
ASSIGNMENT02: SELF-PORTRAIT
- Import the photo that you chose of yourself and begin tracing
- Remember that this self-portrait is a lot more detailed than the previous snapshot, so include background elements that represent you
- Again, no white backgrounds, fill in all areas
- When you’re done, go to FILE > EXPORT SNAPSHOT and choose PNG
- Name it P#_LastFirst_SelfPortrait
- Submit your artwork to the appropriate Dropbox
