01. In-Camera Edit

OBJECTIVE: Demonstrate your ability to plan and organize a story; use the principles of in-camera editing; demonstrate strong technical control of the camera and the ability to incorporate dynamic shot composition.

ASSIGNMENT: Think of a simple story you can tell with pictures and the sounds that occur naturally in the location where you plan to shoot. As the camera operator, you should NOT narrate while you are shooting. Plan the look and the order of the shots so they tell the story logically and without jump cuts.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS (Right Click and Save As):

AS DISCUSSED IN CLASS:

  • DO NOT PLAY BACK YOUR FOOTAGE
  • DO NOT EJECT THE TAPE
  • DO NOT BREAK TIME CODE

PRE-PRODUCTION: Create a shot list and storyboard for your entire movie.  Remember, this is where the bulk of your time is spent.  The more you plan, the easier your next steps will be and, on top of that, the better your movie will ultimately turn out.  Flesh out your ideas as detailed as possible!

  • Storyboards and Shot List need to be approved by Mr. Olmedo before equipment is assigned and permission-to-shoot is granted.

PRODUCTION: This is where the fun begins!  Grab your crew, your equipment, your shot list and storyboards and go, go, go!  Remember you will only have one day to shoot this, so manage your time appropriately!  Have fun and be safe!

POST-PRODUCTION: This is the only assignment that we shoot all year that does not require post-production.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • (Approved) Shot List
  • (Approved) Storyboards
  • Slate your movie before you begin
  • Total Running Time (TRT) is 1:30 – 2:oo
  • Cue up your tape to the beginning of the movie
